Seoul DeFi Meetup #2! — 14 July 2022
Our second Seoul DeFi meetup was held at the EG Building just by Samseong Station last Thursday night and we had two fantastic speakers.
We weren’t sure how many people would attend, but we had over 30+ guests show up — from those just casually interested to students as well as those in the blockchain industry and other sectors too.
We started Seoul DeFi as a place to discuss what we believe to be blockchains’ killer application — DeFi. We are blockchain and project agnostic and open to all. We are exploring ideas about how to best operate to serve the community and ask any of our guests to give their feedback!
In order for our members to better connect with one another to engage, network and more, we also wish to create The Seoul DeFi — The Community Members Directory 🗃
For consenting members, this will be a place for users to find out what others are doing, and what they wish to share or list their own areas of expertise so that you can find your next friend, workmate or collaborator! The form is live; we hope this will eventually grow and we can make the database available to members soon.
To get started:
1. Fill out the form (https://forms.gle/v3rqpUZxQHRQN2NM6) to gain access to an ever-growing list — free!
2. Find and connect with Seoul DeFi community members who can help you, and vice versa!
3. Showcase your profile in an online directory that never gets lost.
Guests and Speakers
In our second event, we hosted 2 speakers from different backgrounds- GameFi and Investment thesis from a venture capital’s point of view.
Laura Valls Alvarez, the Founder and Head of Strategy of Crypto Moon Walkers is a business developer and certified crypto trader leading the business strategy and operation of Crypto Moon Walkers to onboard more people in the Web 3 and Crypto Space. She develops educational off-line/online courses and materials while contributing to the blockchain gaming space aiming to provide a safer space for younger generations.
A long-term resident of South Korea, she is very active in the Blockchain/Web3 industry here in Seoul. An MBA holder from IE Business School, she has a history focusing on the Food Industry with major growth in imported food products from Europe to APAC, as well as other experience in industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and fashion. Initially as interest in the cryptocurrency markets as an investor, and a self-starter she quickly became an educator, a community builder and more in the space. Never one to shy away from a social engagement both in the metaverse and in real life, she is a self-starter who has been busily applying all of her skills from the business world (business development, strategy, marketing and more) by providing vision and experience to various Blockchain technology and Web3 projects that she participates in.
Primarily focused on GameFi, we were delighted to have her come speak at our event about the current state of GameFi — in a presentation that had something for both newbies to the space as well as those more experienced.
She covered a host of factors relating to GameFi, such as:
- What exactly GameFi is and the current state of the industry
- Some of the advantages that P2E (Play to Earn) has over more traditional models like P2P (Pay to Play) and F2P (Free to Play)
- Industry challenges such as regulations, technology limitations, UX, graphics limitations, lack of knowledge and on/off ramps
- How the ecosystem is made up of various components such as exchanges, wallets, infrastructure, guilds and more
- The importance of token mechanics and balance of making games fun to play
- Some of the most exciting games from South Korea and around the world
Laura’s talk was finished off with a Q&A session where she talked about her opinions regarding some of the challenges that GameFi faces in order to get more players onboarded — playing to earn.
Our second speaker was Dorji Rabten, the Founder & Managing Partner of Oddiyana Ventures. He is a Cryptopreneur and Blockchain evangelist who is an expert in accelerating project growth and is an advisor for more than 15+ projects.
Dorji gave a talk about what Venture Capitals look at when they invest in projects and discussed his experiences. He then went on to give a Q&A session with the audience.
After some years working at a few organisations in the industry such as Blockon, OHAS and BeyondFi, Dorji decided to leverage his experience and establish his own venture capital firm — Oddiyāna Ventures in 2021. In their short history they have 100+ projects in their portfolio, incubated 15+ projects and established partnerships with the top launchpads, Tier 1 and Tier 2 CEX, audit firms, tech companies, and marketing/media companies.
Oddiyāna’s portfolio is GameFi and DeFi heavy (approx. 72%) and the remainder is focused on Blockchain service and other categories. As expected with a broad range of companies, Oddiyana takes due diligence in their projects very seriously and considers a lot of factors when they decide to invest, incubate or otherwise support projects.
In his talk, he discussed some factors that he considers when choosing whether to invest in a project as a VC, or not to invest. Some of the points discussed were:
- The investment thesis, including the trends
- The project concept, market relevance and roadmap
- Token Economics AKA Tokenomics
- Legal compliance and company structure
- Product development, including the teams history
- Marketing strategy and community
